ABAIXO-ASSINADO EM APOIO AO JORNALISTA PARAENSE LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO

O repórter e editor do Jornal Pessoal, de Belém do Pará, Lúcio Flávio Pinto, foi condenado pelo juiz Raimundo das Chagas Filho, da 4ª Vara Cível da capital, a pagar uma indenização de R$ 30 mil aos irmãos Romulo Maiorana Júnior e Ronaldo Maiorana, proprietários das Organizações Romulo Maiorana, uma das empresas de comunicação mais influentes da Região Norte, cuja emisssora de TV é afiliada à Rede Globo. A sentença, expedida no último dia 6 de julho de 2009, refere-se a uma das quatro ações indenizatórias movidas pelos irmãos contra o jornalista que, em 2005, publicou artigo ("Um Império ao Norte", leia ao lado) em um livro organizado pelo jornalista italiano Maurizio Chierici, depois reproduzido no Jornal Pessoal, no qual aborda, entre outros aspectos, a atividade de contrabandista do fundador das ORM, Romulo Maiorana, nos anos de 1950, o qu e teria motivado a ação, pois os irmãos consideraram ofensivo o tratamento dispensado à memória do pai. Além da indenização por supostos danos morais, o juiz ainda obriga o jornalista a não mais referir-se aos irmãos em seus próximos artigos.

Lúcio Flávio Pinto, de 59 anos, em quatro décadas de jornalismo é um dos profissionais mais respeitados no Brasil e no exterior. Seu Jornal Pessoal resiste, de forma alternativa, há 22 anos, sem aceitar patrocínio ou anúncios, garantindo a independência de seu editor frente aos temas públicos do Pará, sobretudo na seara política. Por sua atuação intransigente frente aos desmandos políticos, às injustiças sociais e ao desrespeito aos direitos humanos, recebeu prêmios internacionais importantes: em 1997, em Roma, o prêmio Colombe d’oro per La Pace; e em 2005, em Nova Iorque, o prêmio anual do CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists). Além disso, é premiado com vários Esso. É também autor d e 14 livros, tendo como tema central a Amazônia, sendo os mais recentes "Contra o Poder", "Memória do Cotidiano" e "Amazônia Sangrada (de FHC a Lula)".

Esse fato demonstra o que significa fazer jornalismo de verdade na capital do Pará: uma condenação.

Por isso, nós, abaixo-assinados, solidarizamo-nos com Lúcio Flávio Pinto, pedindo a revisão de sua condenação em nome da democracia e da liberdade de pensamento.

Petition in favor of Brazilian journalist Lúcio Flávio Pinto

Lúcio Flávio Pinto is a Brazilian journalist who edits an alternative newspaper called Jornal Pessoal (Personal Journal) in Belém, the capital of State of Pará, in the Amazon Region. On July 6, Lucio Flavio was required by the State Court in Para to pay R$ 30 mil (approximately USD$15,000) to Romulo Maiorana Jr. and his brother Ronaldo Maiorana, owners of the "Romulo Maiorana Organizations", the most influential media company in the North of Brazil, affiliated with Globo TV. The judge, Raimundo das Chagas Filho, convicted Pinto for defamation against the memory of Romulo Maiorana, the founder of the Romulo Maiorana Organizations and the father of Romulo Jr. and Ronaldo Maiorana, Mr. Maiorana Senior, who died in 1985. The reason for Mr. Pinto's conviction was based on an article that Mr. Pinto wrote where he described the past life of Maiorana Senior as a smuggler, around 1950s. The article was included in a book organized by the Italian journalist Maurizio Chierici and republished in Personal Journal, both in 2005. In addition to the USD$15,000 fine, Pinto is also forbidden by the State Court to mention the two brothers' names, Romulo Jr and Maiorana and their father's name, Mr. Maiorana Senior in his newspaper.It is not the first time Pinto has problems with the Maiorana family. In the same 2005, Ronaldo Maiorana, supported by two policemen, who also worked for him as body guards, met Pinto at a restaurant in Belém and started to harass Mr. Pinto. First, they punched him in the face and then threatened to kill him. Many people witnessed the episode that day. The reason for Ronaldo Maiorana's aggression was the subject of another article written by Pinto about the Maiorana family.

Lúcio Flávio Pinto is a 59-year-old man who has dedicated four decades of his life to journalism. Mr. Pinto is one the most respected professionals in Brazil and abroad. He bravely maintains the Personal Journal with no sponsors or advertisings. He has done so in order to keep his independence about public political matters in Pará. He strongly addresses political disorder, social injustice and violations of human rights in the Amazon region by denouncing the actions and presenting the facts. As a result of his efforts and professional dedication, Mr. Pinto has received several important awards in Brasil, such as four Esso Awards. Esso is the Brazilian Award for the best Journalist. Mr. Pinto has received the following awards abroad: in 1997, he was awarded the Colombe d'Oro per La Pace; in Rome, Italy and in 2005, he received the annual award promoted by Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in New York.

He has also written 14 books about issues in the Amazon Region such as the recent publications "Contra o Poder" (Against Power), "Memória do Cotidiano" (Daily Memory) and "Amazônia Sangrada (de FHC a Lula)" (Bled Amazon: from Fernando Henrique Cardoso to Lula, presidents of Brazil).

As far as we are concerned, Pinto was condemned for practicing journalism and exercising freedom of speech.

For this reason, we have started a campaign to make people aware of this serious case and to petition a revision in the sentence he received from the courts. Finally, we ask for your support by signing this document (with ID number).
